Common questions

Is there a cost to join?
No — the programme is completely free to attend. There's no membership fee, no subscription, and no cost for your CPD certificate.
Do I need to be an HPB trainee to join?
Not at all. While the sessions are designed around HPB surgery, we welcome anyone with an interest — general surgery registrars, anaesthetists, oncologists, specialist nurses, medical students, and foundation doctors all attend. If in doubt, just sign up.
I'm based outside London — can I still participate?
Yes. All sessions are streamed live via Microsoft Teams, so you can attend from anywhere in the country. The Teams link is shared with registered members. You can also attend in person at Royal Free if you're visiting London.
How does CPD work for external attendees?
Once you're registered, you log attendance for each session you attend (in person via QR code, or virtually via the platform). Your personal profile tracks all sessions and hours automatically. You can download a PDF CPD certificate at any time — it lists every session attended, the date, topic, and total hours.
Will this be accepted by the Royal Colleges?
The sessions are internally organised teaching, equivalent to departmental teaching at your own trust. CPD certificates generated by the platform are appropriate for logging in your portfolio (ISCP or equivalent). We are also working towards formal RCS accreditation. If you have specific college requirements, we're happy to discuss.
How do I register?
Click "Register to join" at the top of this page, or visit join.hpbteaching.app. Fill in your details and we'll get you set up on the platform — usually within a few working days.
Does the platform work on NHS computers?
Yes. The platform is a standard website accessible over HTTPS from any browser — NHS networks included. The Teams link for virtual attendance also works within NHS networks. Some NHS email servers may occasionally filter emails from the platform; let us know if you're not receiving notifications.
Can I present at a session?
Absolutely — we actively encourage trainees from external units to present. If you're interested in contributing a session, get in touch and we'll find a suitable date. You'll receive a pre-filled PowerPoint template and full support from the organising team.
Is there a commitment once I join?
None at all. You can attend as many or as few sessions as suits you. There's no minimum attendance and you can unsubscribe at any time.
